FAQ for Converge Hybrid
Q: Is this a school?
- No, we are a small group tutoring enrichment program for registered homeschoolers. If you have not registered as a homeschooler before, it’s a simple process! In Kansas, you register as a non-accredited private school. If you have more questions concerning registering your child as a homeschooler, feel free to reach out: stacie@convergespace.com
Q: Do you provide all curriculum?
- No, we do not. As a homeschool tutoring and enrichment program, we believe parents should choose their children’s core curriculum. Homeschooling allows for freedom and autonomy to choose what works best for your child. While I am happy to share insight and give direction for curriculum choices, you know your child best! Each day, your student will bring from home their reading, math, and any other independent curriculum you would like them to complete during our “core” time together (handwriting, typing, etc.). I will be available for one-on-one lessons during that time, as well as providing group lessons when I feel they are needed. I also provide weekly lessons in P.E., Art, Science, Music, Geography, and Literature Study (with writing). It is recommended to complete core curriculum and any additional subjects your family loves at least two additional days per week.
Q: Do you give grades?
- As a homeschool tutoring and enrichment program, I do not give grades. I do provide feedback on assignments and re-teaching of skills as needed. In addition, I will be monitoring your child’s progress and keeping a checklist of skills. Parent conferences will be held twice per year. While our program is a partnership, we believe parents hold the ultimate authority concerning student progress.
Q: Is a multi-age program really effective?
- I’m a huge fan of a one-room schoolhouse approach and believe it has many benefits! We recognize that every student learns differently and at their own pace. Within our mixed-age environment, students experience reduced pressure to compete and compare themselves with peers. This allows them to learn without anxiety about “being behind” or feeling bored if they’re more advanced. Moreover, daily interactions with students of varying ages cultivate empathy and compassion, enriching their educational experience with valuable social and emotional growth.
Q: Can you accommodate special needs or students with behavior issues?
- Maybe or maybe not. While I am absolutely committed to meeting each child’s social, emotional and intellectual needs and have training and experience with learning disorders and mild autism, behavioral issues and profound developmental delays fall out of my expertise. If your student has moderate or severe learning issues or behaviors, they will be better served by experts in the field. If you have specific questions concerning your student, please contact me at stacie@convergespace.com.
- Behavior expectations are outlined in the enrollment packet/handbook. Our program seeks to provide a safe, peaceful, and structured environment for learning. While typical childish misbehavior is expected on occasion, consistently unsafe, disrespectful, or harmful behavior is not tolerated.
Q: Is there a dress code?
- We have a flexible dress code based on safety and comfort. As we will spend much time outside, play clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, torn, or stained would be most appropriate. I also ask that students dress for the weather with layers available. An extra set of clothing and shoes to be stored at our homesite is recommended. Please avoid clothing with inappropriate words or pictures.
Q: What should my child bring each day?
- Backpack with core curriculum and checklist for the day’s work
- Sack lunch + 2 snacks in a labeled lunch carrier and a water bottle.
Q: Will staff be background checked?
- As a teacher certified with the state of Kansas, I had an extensive background check in order to receive my certification (renewal was a few years ago with a fingerprint check done at the police station). My husband works from home for the Department of Agriculture and is in and out of the house throughout the week. He has also recently had a clear background check done through Big Brothers and Big Sisters. References are available upon request.
- Any additional staff will be vetted and a background check will be done.
Q: Can I come in and volunteer or stay with my child?
- You are certainly welcome to come in and stay for a few minutes at drop-off or pop-in as needed. Developmentally, I have found children settle in more easily once a parent leaves, particularly if they are not used to being away from a parent. Please feel free to discuss this with me as I know the comfort level of parents vary, and I will work with you to make a plan that feels right for all parties.
- Once our enrollment is determined and if there is a need for volunteers, I would be happy to discuss possibilities with you. If you have a specific skill set you would like to share with students, I would love to know!
- For safety of all parties, cameras are installed in the school areas and outdoor areas of the homesite. Cameras have video and audio capabilities.
Q: Is this a religious program?
- Yes, I am a Christian and hold a Christian worldview. As such, I have chosen some curriculum that is from a Christian viewpoint. I will also weave beauty and Truth in our curriculum and discussions. However, I do not require a signed statement of faith and will not be explicitly teaching any particular denominational theology beyond historic tenets of Christianity. We will have a short devotional and prayer at the beginning of each day and prayer at the end of each day.
